The Crooked Man

Submitted by: Josh Peters

I'm Josh. I'm a 17-year-old from Ontario, Canada.

About 2 years ago (grade 10), I wasn't myself. I worked and worked and worked every day (until 3 in the morning, mostly) on school work and kept on getting bad grades, despite me working hard. That's when I went spiraling down into a depression. The constant work also really tore up my relationship with friends and family, especially my parents. It was the worst year of my life.
However, one day I was going through YouTube. I'm a big fan of this YouTuber called PewDiePie (who is actually the #1 most subscribed channel on YouTube), and he released a bunch of videos where he plays through a pixel-horror game called "the Crooked Man", which is about a guy who visits all these places, looking for someone, and who gets chased around by the Crooked Man, who is actually a metaphor in the game for Depression. That got me through my depression. Not just PewDiePie's humour, but the fact that I could relate so well to the character in the story.
It's about going through something tough, despite not wanting to.
2 years later, I went back and re-watched it again, and I could remember all of those past feelings. Only this time, I decided to finally get it out of my system in the form of this song.

The Crooked Man is watching you
you never leave his view
he wants you to end it all
and everything you do

the Crooked Man is watching you
for yet another day
he wants you to end it all
and everything you say

the Crooked Man stands next to you
he whispers in your ear
he tells you to kill yourself
and never come back here

the Crooked Man stands next to you
he smiles with Crooked teeth
he wants you to end your life
and never let you breathe

I feel so down that I'm 6 feet underground
I'm scared of what's to come and I'm scared I'm not the one
for you

the Crooked Man is watching you
it's scary but it's true
if only he would go away
if only someone knew

the Crooked Man is jealous
he wants be like you
but he can never have it
so he makes you Crooked, too

I can't cry no matter how hard I try
nothing's ever good enough and times have been so tough

But, I won't be like you Crooked Man
you won't drag me away
I'm gonna keep on living
to see another day
